How Do You Enjoy Your Oreos?

One of the communities I am most proud to be apart of is the Confessions of a Stay-at-Home Mom Facebook page.  It doesn't have 1 million followers. It doesn't do anything particularly amazing or enlightening. But somehow, over time, it has become a place to chat about parenting, randomness, current events and general life topics and tomfoolery.

It's seriously a fun place to be.

I've tried my hardest to make the CSHM Facebook page a space that is safe to talk, a place where one can share their thoughts and opinions but not get shot down.  I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions and that mature adults can discuss difference with grace and respect. In the end, I truly believe that our differences are beautiful, because we can learn a lot from hearing from "the other side."

I'm sure at this point you're asking, "Steph, what does your Facebook page have to do with enjoying oreos? I saw the word 'oreos', you drew me in, and now I'm confused."

Hold on. I'm getting there.

So our community is generally a pretty great space. Yesterday was the first time we hit a major bump in the road.  I posted a photo earlier in the week about something I saw and disagreed with.  I won't link to the photo or post, nor will I say what it was about because I'm not trying to rehash or reignite any fires. Most people shared their two cents and moved on.  There were a few dissenting remarks, which turned ugly, which proceeded to become quite a heated conversation.  It was the epitome of people being mean for mean's sake, and inciting a riot for the sake of inciting a riot.

(And if you know anything about me, you know I despise confrontation and the thought that people are angry makes me anxious and sweaty. It was not a good few hours)

I was moved by how the CSHM Community rallied around the conversation, and things eventually died down and returned to normal.

Later in the evening, I came across this post about the flack that Oreo (yes, the cookie) was receiving over a picture they posted on Facebook and Twitter

This was the tweet:

Ohhhhh controversy.

Sure, some may agree or disagree over the topic of homosexuality. I've shared my thoughts several times on the matter. What bothered me was not a company giving their support to people in their community. No, this I find courageous. It was the backlash of hatred that followed.  If you want to read the entire Facebook thread (which is up to 30,000+ comments), you can find it here. Upon posting, people immediately began to bash Oreo (and Nabisco, the brand behind Oreo) for posting anything that resembled support of the LGBT movement, spewing so many awful and disgusting words toward the homosexual community.

Friends, we live in a diverse world. We're all different from one another. And we aren't going to agree and see eye to eye. You may not agree on how people raise their kids, how people proclaim their faith, what kind of food people choose to eat or who people decide to love. But we are a community.  Made up of people, real people. And if we don't show each other grace and respect, the world will continue to be an awful, hateful place.

We need to love and support one another.

So I commend Oreo for supporting the LGBT people in their community.  In my community. I'm not sure how you feel about homosexuality. And while I am not here asking for you to agree with me, I'd love to encourage you to choose love over hate. I know that by writing this post, I may become unpopular with some folks or lose readers.  I'm okay with that. Because it all comes back to community.  And after seeing some hate flying around my own CSHM Facebook Page community yesterday, I'd like to show Oreo and the LGBT people in my community a little rallying.

Would you join me? As an act of love?

Throw in your support by answering this question:

(Personally, I can't eat Oreos without milk.  I need to dunk my Oreos in the milk long enough for it to get just the right amount of soggy [still intact - if it falls into the abyss of the bottom of the cup of milk, it's been too long], and then pop it into my mouth).

I look forward to reading all of your yummy responses in the comments below!!

  1. I will only eat and Oreo if it's of the DoubleStuf variety. There has to be milk involved and I too dunk until it's just the right amount of soggy.

    1. It's really important to find that perfect soggy level, isn't it?

  2. I love Oreo, I love that the brand and company chose to support diversity.
I eat them smashed up in vanilla ice cream :)

  3. You hit the nail on the head! Although I am still learning to pull back my aggressive nature and be more respectful and kind, I have always known that this world is immediate to hate what is not "normal" or not like them. Instead of trying to see anything from their point of view, its immediate anger, hostility and hatred.

Anyway, I am sorry if any of my aggressiveness came off too offensive, but I also am not sorry at the same time because I felt like I needed to defend all the moms. I dunno. lol!

But I am a double stuffed milk dipper... a billion times over!

    4. Christine - we need to have an Oreo GNO. Why? Because I'm sad to admit I've NEVER HAD A GOLDEN OREO. How do we remedy this? And can we make sure ice cream is involved?

  4. I just re-read the Pregnant Parking Spot thread. Wow. The sad thing is that threads like that really are pretty normal in other forums. It's just not normal for our friendly, close-knit little town here. I always say that when people lash out like that, it's has nothing to do with you and is really a reflection of what the person doesn't like about herself.
I totally support the Oreo tweet but I really don't like Oreos.

    Rock on, Steph!,

  5. I love this, I love you. My favorite way is to have an ice cold glass of milk and dunk my Oreos with reckless abandon! xoxo

  6. I love Oreos no matter what color, flavor, race, or sexual orientation they are. Just like I love my people. xoxo Great post, Stephanie.

  7. Love double stuff, and for some reason love it when they have the red icing at christmas time. I know, it makes no sense! But I'm very color oriented. I buy detergent in green or blue bottles NEVER orange! And I won't drink Mountain Dew because of the color. I love oreos like the ones I made in this post: http://cookiesforweddings.blogspot.com/2010/09/rainbow-color-cookie-and-candy-buffet.html
Again, rainbow oreos! So I guess now I'm in trouble too! But really, aren't they pretty?

  8. Oh yes, and one other thing that I am picky about the color of, Baby Peeps. I know, I know, they are full of sugar and aren't good for me! But will only eat the yellow chicks, no bunnies, (even in yellow) and no pink or purples. And definitely no halloween or valentine's dya peeps! Yuck!

  12. Weird, I happened upon your page totally accidentally by Googling T-Fal Giveaways! - lol! And here I am scouring the site endlessly because I'm enjoying my time here so much (and I just *liked* your Facebook page!) - and I must say, I'm so grateful that you posted this today. I appreciate your support for Oreo and for the LGBT community. I'm a straight woman with four children, and I don't understand why people get so up in arms over the fact that people are gay. It saddens me. So, thank you! Your post today made me smile!
As for Oreos... well, it sounds as though you & I are two peas in a pod on this one - I'm a dunker, wait til it gets soggy but not mushy, and enjoy the heck out of it! Woohoo!

    2. Oh, sorry! Just saw this. I don't have an Acti-Fry but I've heard good things about it. I'm sort-of obsessed with Jamie Oliver at the moment so I'm a bit into T-Fal, lol. :D

    2. I used to blog, but... well, I don't blog regularly b/c I suck, L O L. So, yes... I posted it on my personal FB page. I need to get back into blogging. I loved it when I did it, but I get easily sidetracked. Oooh, something shiny...

  14. I found your little corner of the web, thanks to my friend Christine, who also commented :)
I will be honest and I have struggled with the Gay Community or being OK with all of it. I know, I know. I am not Gay so why should "I" have to be OK with it... I get it and I am learning.
But long story short... God is the ONLY and FINAL judge of us all. Who am I to say what is right or wrong? It's God's job for that. I don't want to take that away from him. It's HIS final decision who he lets into his kingdom. NOT MINE. NOT my church's and NOT anyone's... only God's.
God loves EVERYONE. I don't care who you are or what you do. Even if you do not support the LBGT Community, God still loves you. If you DO support the LBGT Community, God loves you.

So. ALL that said, let's just all get along and play nice... Love each other and let God do HIS job :)

    1. Mary Jo - Thank you SO much for sharing. More than anything, I can absolutely appreciate struggling with ideas like this. I've struggled in my faith the last few years - so I totally understand trying to get one's mind around something. But your words could not be more true: God loves EVERYONE. And I believe we are meant to love everyone - it's not our job to judge OR hate. Well said!

  15. I, too, love to dunk to the ideal sogginess. Sometimes I like to go a little crazy and add peanut butter (Parent Trap style). Have you tried it? It's phenomenal! But I am also a firm believer that peanut butter makes everything better :)

  16. Your biggest concern when you compare pay day loans
should be the terms you will sign payday loans generally,
this signifies that just about all people begin to see the beach as a natural relaxant.
