I'm not much of a trickster (and no cheap shots about being a "fool"), so April Fool's Day is not a highlight of my year. I have never been able to participate in tricking someone, playing pranks or being particularly cunning. It makes me feel guilty, vulnerable and generally uncomfortable to partake in (or observe) such activities
I believe it's because I am so pure of heart.
I have lots of friends and family who are much more adept at pulling the wool over people's eyes. My one friend, Brie, grew up in a family of tricksters. She'd always have all these amazing stories about pranks they played. Most of them involved the traditionally sinister ploys of throwing rice on someone's white bedsheets, short-sheeting beds, and the ever-enjoyable plastic wrap on the toilet seat. You can imagine I kept extra care to keep watch when I slept over her house (this may or may not also have to do with the fact that her mom once hid in a closet and scared me half to death while I was on a trip to the mountains with them).
My sister-in-law, Laura, has found some very cute and creative ways to make April Fool's Day fun for her kids (they are preschool and elementary age). Over the past few weeks, Laura has been doing some research on new (fun and harmless) tricks to play on her kids (and husband!) on April 1st. A few years ago, she did a great job totally surprising them with a special "Cupcake Dinner." The kids were SO excited! Little did they know, Laura had made "cupcakes" out of meatloaf with mashed potato frosting (dyed pink for effect). To look at them, ANYONE would have been fooled! She also had a beautiful "floral" centerpiece. What the kids didn't know was that the flower and dirt in a pot was actually a tasty pudding dessert called, well, Dirt! It (mostly) made up for the Cupcakes trick. Mostly.
So while I may not partake in tomorrow's festivities, I thought it'd be fun to start a running list of fun, clean and harmless pranks, in case anyone out there is looking for ideas! If you have a good prank (especially if it is kid-friendly), leave a comment on this post, email me, or leave a comment on the CSHM Facebook Page (if you aren't already a fan, it's not too late to "like" the page - see the right side bar). I'll keep adding to the list on this post as I receive them! I'll start the list by linking to the pranks I shared above (I also linked to them above).

Plastic-wrapped Toilet Seat (more for adult fun, not kids)
Family Friendly tricks from Disney Family Fun (Lots of ideas here - thanks Laura!)
Keep the jokes, gags and pranks coming! Comment, email, or Facebook to add your ideas to the list! Check back for new ones throughout the day.
And stop back later for a Tasty Treat Thursday recipe...
