I am often sobered by the realization that my life is not like a movie. There is no title flashing in my sky as the dawn of my day arrives. I am not greeted by a cheerful ditty as I walk, through the sunshine, over the green grass in my front yard to retrieve the mail. There is no narrator to explain (to me especially) where I have misplaced my keys. And, sadly, there is no romantic harmony to haunt me as my husband kisses me goodnight.
But, I think, subconsciously, we do portray our lives like movies in our minds. I know I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure I am not alone in this. I narrate my day, my dialogue with other people, my internal monologue continuously as the time passes by. And, I am quite sure, I unknowingly pick out a daily soundtrack to emphasize my thoughts and feelings. It is flexible, changing with the mood and situation. It gets more angry and full of base when things start going wrong, and becomes more sunny and hopeful during a walk in gorgeous Spring weather.
Yesterday I was thinking about this idea, and wondered what my soundtrack would be. I had a rough day yesterday (one of those days where everything goes wrong, almost comically, leaving you saying, "Really? Like, seriously?"). The day got off and on better, and the rest of the week looks more hopeful. So I complied a playlist for my week, in no particular order:
1) American Girl - Tom Petty
2) Come on Get Higher - Matt Nathanson
3) Fix You - Coldplay
4) Joyful Girl - Ani Difranco
5) Old Apartment - Barenaked Ladies
6) Leave Out All The Rest - Linkin Park
7) Rodeo - Aaron Copeland
8) Accidentally in Love - Counting Crows
9) If I Were a Boy - Beyonce
10) Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
11) Hurt - Johnny Cash
12) Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
13) Anna Begins - Counting Crows
14) Zak and Sara - Ben Folds
15) Samson - Regina Spektor
16) Look After You - The Fray
17) Move Along - All-American Rejects
Don't read too much into the actual words or titles. No, I don't wonder about If I Were a Boy, and I am not currently Hurt. :) I am mainly focused on the way songs make me feel, and thats how I chose them.
I'll post another soundtrack next week. I'll be interested to see what songs make it on the list!
